A 22-foot sign, rigged on the first try
Graduates Day needed a centerpiece: a sign hung in the arena, big enough to anchor the graduation and refined enough for the occasion. We designed and built a 22-foot-3-inch "Graduates Day" sign, gold-painted MDF letterforms in Libre Caslon on a steel frame, rigged from truss with aircraft cable. The whole piece weighs between 350 and 400 pounds and bolts together in two sections for transport.
The detail that earns its keep: a swappable year section. The class year changes, the sign comes back. We store the piece between ceremonies and re-install it annually.
Alongside the main sign, we built a giant Vanderbilt "V" in plywood and foam, finished in Vanderbilt Gold.
The install. Load-in over two days. The rigging, including a 55-inch cantilever, hit on the first attempt. The certificate of delivery and acceptance was signed onsite the same day, and the project finished under budget.
